The
History of BRS
The movement to establish an Orthodox Synagogue in Boca Raton, began in October
1983, when sixty people attended the first membership meeting. Over the next
several years, services were held in schools and private homes. Several Rabbis
served as the spiritual leader of BRS for short periods.
In 1991 Rabbi Kenneth Brander came from New York to serve as the Rabbi of the synagogue. During his 14 years as Rabbi, the synagogue grew to close to 600 families and during that time most of the infrastructure that serves the community today was developed. We owe to Rabbi Brander the existence of almost all of the orthodox institutions which serve our community and have led to its rapid development. In September 2005, Rabbi Brander resigned from the synagogue to take the position of inaugural Dean for the Center for the Jewish Future - Yeshiva University. At that point the Board elected to give Rabbi Brander the title of Rabbi Emeritus.
On September 1, 2005, Rabbi Efrem Goldberg assumed the position of Marah D`atrah
of the synagogue and mikvah.
Today, the Synagogue has grown to a membership of over 600 families. In addition
to providing daily, Shabbat and holiday services, the Synagogue offers a broad
adult education program, sisterhood activities, men’s club events, Chevra
Kadisha, chesed and hospitality committees, and more. The
youth program
currently serves the needs of close to 1,000 children. |
